“We
think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and
homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is
the greatest poverty. We must start in our homes to remedy this kind
of poverty.” — Mother Teresa

It
was hot, but it was fun. On Sunday June 14th several
volunteers and a youth group got together to plant a garden to
benefit the community. BACM and the First Presbyterian
Church’s Youth
Group are collaborating on a garden project that will
provide free produce to seniors and disabled individuals in
Barberton and Norton this summer. So, for several hours,
everyone prepared the soil, weeded our rows, planted our
vegetables
and watered the very dry ground. It was grueling work but
everyone worked hard and splashed water on people to cool off!
Now we must wait for the garden to grow. As produce becomes
available we will not only provide free produce to BACM”s pantry
but we will also sell the produce in the Farmer’s Market to put
money back into the pantry. When the garden
starts
producing look for another article announcing its arrival so you
can visit us at the market.
BACM and the youth group are also part of a bigger
group called the Barberton Community Growers Association. Their
purpose is aimed at helping unemployed people gain some working
knowledge of running a small business by selling their produce
for a pr ofit. The
group has received a “Self Development of People” grant from the
Eastminster Presbytery and has planted their gardens. Anyone
interested in becoming part of the group can contact BACM at
330-745-3693 for more information. |
We are
the only authorized agency in Barberton for the Ohio Benefit
Bank and will assist families to make an electronic application
for some state and federal benefits.

A Word From Our
Volunteers:
I can empathize with our clients. I have had
some bad years. I've had to live in my car, and been homeless.
People were always kind to me, now it is my turn to give back. I
get just as much out of it as I put into it and I am grateful
that I can do it.

A Volunteer
I began volunteering
at BACM several years ago in response to a "help wanted" notice
in my church bulletin. This ministry is a great service to many
in the Barberton-Norton area. I've met so many nice people here:
staff, clients, and other volunteers.
When I talked about my experience here to some friend, they like
what they heard and are now volunteering too. It is nice to see
many denominations all work together to assist those in need.
